The second Bike Manawatu AGM was held last week in conjunction with the track prize giving. I was great to see so many attendees.

We now have two new board members being John Arbuckle and Iona McCarthy. John comes with a long history of social riding with the former Masters Club and now is an active parent involved with schools cycling. Iona too has had a long involvement and interest in cycling at many levels both with her family , riding with the Velo Girls and organising events. We look forward to the input from John and Iona into developing our strategy to keep cycling strong in this region.

The full Board is therefore:

Paul van Velthooven

Steve Stannard

Mike Daisley

Mark Waterland

Mike Christie

John Arbuckle

Iona McCarthy

Glenys Taylor ( secretary)

Remember that all members are invited to attend the Board meetings which are held every 4-6 weeks usually on a Tuesday night at Sport Manawatu rooms. Glenys can be contacted for meeting dates.

All the best for those club riders attending the Club Nationals in Napier this week. Given the form of many of our riders over recent weeks then a few Bike Manawatu podium finishes can be expected across all categories.

‘The heart of NZ cycling’

As Chairman of Bike Manawatu I can scarcely believe that this is only the second report presented to our Club AGM. So much has happened in our brief history and so much has been achieved.

Last year, soon after the AGM, the new Board met at a special strategy meeting where we agreed and moved that the new vision for the Club is “to be the heart of cycling in New Zealand”. You may or may not have noticed that since then both Destination Manawatu and Vision Manawatu, along with the City Council and Manawatu District, have adopted a regional strategy which states their vision as being “to be the best place in New Zealand to ride a bike”.

Submissions to LTP for Bike PDF Print E-mail

Please make sure that you go to the PNCC website and make your submission in support of the Plan to make this place the “ best in New Zealand to ride a bike”.

This must be done by 4.00pm this Friday 27th April.

The goal to be the best place to ride is aspirational and a good challenge for both PNCC and the community.

To get there we need certain infrastructure which means council money.

The proposed cycle ways, safer roads and cycle friendly infrastructure will help to reach that goal.

Simply registering your support will give councillors the confidence to vote the money to keep the strategy and proposal in the Long Term Plan.

The more submissions the better. You do not need to speak to them.

A Plan to Bike Long Term PDF Print E-mail

I recently attended a presentation along with many other bike-friendly people to listen to the vision that BikeNZ has around cycling in this country. It is on the BikeNZ website and is worth a read. Much of what is in it is a microcosm of the issues we as a club face. That is….how is BikeNZ relevant to it’s members, how best to embrace the members, how to grow membership and do we service our membership in meaningful way.

BikeNZ understands that there is a disconnect between the many thousands that ride bikes but are not part of a club structure or even understand what role their local club let alone BikeNZ might play in delivering cycling to their area. Therefore, looking ahead there is going to be a new membership model based loosely around whether you want to ‘Ride” or whether you want to “ Race”. The Plan is to engage more effectively with all those who ride bikes socially , to work, to school participate in events, or who want to race. The new membership model is to be rolled out across all cycling disciplines.

The Big Stage is the next stage PDF Print E-mail

What a fantastic week that was for our young Bike Manawatu cyclists in Invercargill at the age group nationals representing West Coast North Island. By all accounts, the whole team performed remarkably on and off the track and came home with a host of medals. The WCNI team ended up 4th on the ladder behind the big centres of Southland , Auckland and Canterbury. Those Centres were heavily represented in the Masters categories….WCNI had only one rider in that group!!!!

Special mention should be made of Michaela Drummond with 4 gold medals in the U15 Girls. They could not touch Michaela for speed. We see evidence of her speed at Johnston park every Tuesday night over summer. Campbell Stewart won 3 gold medals  and one silver…the Southland boys tried everything to block Campbell but he has too much racing nous and of course he has the gas. And of course big sister Kate ….despite a huge workload where she entered virtually every available U17 girls event from sprint to points to scratch plus teams events , Kate came home with 2 gold medals, 2 silver and a bronze.Incredible…she will be sleeping well this week!
