Bike Manawatu Schools’ Cycling Camp 2012 Group 1A in front and group 2 in the back Photo Rebecca Denholm Another cycling camp done and dusted for 2012. As we departed Girls’ High School on Saturday morning anticipating for the ride we had a head of us to Rathkeale College in Marsterton. This year we had around 60 students this year, which is definitely an improvement from last year. Due to the Pahiatua Track being a no go, we had to make an alternative start point this year. So instead of starting at Girl’s High on our bikes we started at the intersection to go to Balance instead which slightly reduced the number of kilometres we rode. Due to big numbers this year we spilt the students wanting to participate in the 100km ride into an A and B grade to make the groups safer and to avoid any accidents. So at 9am the students involved in the 60km ride, drove to Rongomai to begin their ride to Rathkeale. At 9.05 the A group for the 100km ride departed to the Balance intersection, shortly followed by the B group 10 minutes after, and lastly the 40km group drove to Alfredton school where they started their ride. |

Manawatu Schools Cycling Camp 2012
Group 1A photo Rebecca Denholm The third weekend of March saw 59 young and enthusiastic cyclists take to the roads of the Wairarapa. The weather conditions could not have been any better and to have little to no wind was the bonus enjoyed by all. The annual Manawatu Schools cycling camp in which the 59 cyclists took part in by cycling either 92km, 62km or 40 km to Rathkeale College, on the outskirts of Masterton on the Saturday and home again on the Sunday. The purpose of the camp is not only to challenge the young talent coming through but to also teach them basic skills to become safer and more considerate cyclists and to equip them with the confidence to help them cope with unexpected situations that might present themselves in a race or on a training ride. It could be described as a defensive riders course.

School Cycling Camp 24/25 March at Rathkeale College Of the 12 PNINS students who came on camp only Gorgi Van Lienen and I had taken part in any school road cycling last year and this was the first time for all of us at a “cycling” camp. It was a really good team building exercise and we got to meet lots of cyclists from other schools in the Manawatu. We Group 3 at Alfredton photo Jan Arbuckle learnt lots...I might even clean my own bike now instead of getting Dad to do it :-) We all had a fun time at Rathkeale and now we’re really looking forward to doing more rides next term as we build up to the National Schools Competitions. A big thanks to all of the parents who helped us. Libby Arbuckle Photos thanks to Rebecca Denholm |
